Secondary school
Transition into secondary school can be a new challenge for adopted children. There are higher expectations including multiple daily transitions between teachers, classrooms, and activities. Pupils can find it harder to navigate big school sites, and manage noisy corridors and lunch activities. Often adopted children need more time, preparation and flexibility to enable them to thrive in secondary education.
Adoption Counts recommends ensuring your child’s school is aware they are adopted. This enables access to Pupil Premium Plus, additional funding which supports your child’s education. Speak to your child’s school about how this is spent to support your child’s education.
If you would like more advice about working with your child’s school, you can attend one of Adoption Counts dedicated parent evening sessions, focussed on working with your child’s school or nursery. Sign up to our newsletter for more information by emailing ACevents@adoptioncounts.org.uk
Your virtual school can also offer support. Find your local virtual school here.
Further support is through SEND provision in your local area. Specialist education is also available for children who need additional support and a specialist setting. Learn more about SEND here.
PAC-UK’s guide for school staff 'Meeting the needs of adopted and permanently placed children: A guide for school staff' covers a range of topics including: what we know about adopted children in education, a background to early developmental trauma, whole school approaches, and support for schools and families.
