Pre-school

Adopted children need to build relationships with their adoptive parents, and time together, playing, talking, and connecting, will be a vital foundation for your child. We encourage all parents to take a minimum of six months away from work to build this essential foundation with your child or children.

When your child is ready to go to nursery, your child’s social worker can offer advice about how best to support them into a new setting.

You’re encouraged to tell nursery that they are adopted, and inform nursery what this means for your child. Your child may be more sensitive to changes of staff and routine, and may find it harder to settle and need more reassurance and care than others. They may need a longer introduction or shorter days. Each child is different.

Schools can access money called Early Years Pupil Premium, which can be used to support your child.

If you would like more advice about choosing a nursery or pre-school, you can attend one of Adoption Counts dedicated parent evening sessions, focussed on working with your child’s school or nursery.
