Young people move into further education can often benefit from additional help with the transition. At times of stress, young people’s coping strategies can revert to younger years and it can be harder for them to use their skills such as organising, prioritising and time management. It takes time to learn and embed new skills and this is often during a period of developing their identity and learning about relationships and friendships.

Alongside your young person, speak to their education setting and see what additional support is available. This could be in the form of specialist support for any disability or neurodiversity, reasonable adjustments, or support in developing the skills they need to succeed.

This is also a period for preparing for adulthood and developing independence. Services change post 18 and it’s important to be aware of upcoming changes such as to benefits claims, health services and support services.

Here at Adoption Counts we have a dedicated member of the team who can advise on accessing therapeutic support for young people 18 and above. Contact us for more information.
