Mental health

Parenting - especially through adoption - can bring unique challenges. Children and young people who have experienced early trauma, loss or change may need additional emotional and psychological support as they grow.

The NHS offers a range of mental health services for children, young people and adults. Whether you're concerned about your child’s wellbeing or your own, help is available.

Support for children and young people

Adopted children may face emotional challenges such as anxiety, low mood, aggression, or difficulties with sleep and eating. These can be linked to their early life experiences and transitions.

  • Speak to your GP – They can refer you or your child to the right service.

  • Self-refer online – Many NHS mental health services now accept direct referrals.
